There is a little bit of crackle to this release, but it's not obstructive and adds an unintentional lo-fo ambience to the record despite the rest of it actually being pretty clear and otherwise high quality in it's sound, at least to me.

due to the nature of this material, unless you have a very good deck/player this will have a lot of wow and flutter. if you have a nice deck or player it will sound great. buyer beware there is a lot of piano/electric piano which is played slowly and this will illuminate the W&F issues your machine has. i am playing on a top tier deck now and it sounds fantastic, previously i played on a crappy walkman and it sounded like garbage.

This is a very warm-sounding, funky record, and not at all like winter in America, which is generally very cold and not at all funky!! I think "Summer in America" would have been a more befitting title, but unfortunately I was not around when Gil and Brian were picking the name for the record.

i bought this in high school back in 98 ,sounds like it was cut from a cassette tape inside a fishbowl,, i tracked down an NM original for 8 bucks ,it wiped the floor with it,,,, god i miss those days anyways avoid this reissue there is a reason it is cheap

Shouldn't we also list Larry McDonald on congas (at least on "The Bottle / Guan Guanco (Live)"; 7:40)?

This might be just one of the best albums of the 70's - at the very least, it's one of the most touching. The parts that really get to me are the songs where it's just Jackson drenching the surroundings in that beautiful echoey classic Rhodes tremolo, making everything seem sweet and uneasy at the same time, while Gil delivers lyrics that are half prayer and half love song, in a voice I can only describe as "honest-sounding". Sad hopefulness or hopeful sadness? Whatever it is, it's painfully intimate. The whole album is such an experience.
That having been said, does anyone know of a good CD reissue of it? The one I recently bought (SNAF833CD from Charly Records) has quite a bit of hiss on it, and I'm sure that there must be better-sounding versions out there.

Winter of America continues familiar themes, of social commentary and black consciousness, but there's more of a focus on instrumentation here than on the previous album "Free Will", so the result is more palatable, although the production is generally more stripped down than on "Pieces of Man" and there are a couple of lighter tunes. "The Bottle" is the nearest he ever gets to writing a pop song and is easily his most enduring tune.
