Glitterbug's PRIVILEGE stretches over 2 CDs -- and right from "Lionheart," he incites a feeling of calm with its long, sustained tones and piano chords, while "Swirl" brings in some percussion. The album as a whole continues in that vein, going from ambient to more groove-driven pieces ("Calcutta") and back again. A hint of glitch even peeks into the darkness of "Vertical Extent." But, above all, a sedateness permeates these tracks. These beats aren't meant for the dancefloor (though "After All" comes close for a while, as does the acid-touched "Blast"), but rather as a mood-enhancer. "Confront," for instance, has some steady breaks that keeps under the radar, while "Pink Sparks (Cave Edit)" maintains a 4/4 beneath its plaintive tones. On the second disc, "Waves" starts deep undertow to contrast the drippy tones on the surface, while "Float" does precisely that. The beats make an appearance back on "Cornered," and the wobbliness of "Slurred Thinking" gradually sharpen over the length of the track. "So Could We" shakes things up by presenting a straightforward piano composition, while "Transitions" brings in some reggae off-beat touches, and "Over Water" goes for dub techno. And "Walk Me" ends the album on a sweet note. A fascinating journey, even if nothing really rises above the surface.
