My version of this has the same barcode and catalog number 9442-1 / 724596944219 but it doesn't contain a CD. It comes with a folded poster instead.

It's news to me that there are people who "reject" this album. The first time I heard it I was swept into retro sci-fi-fantasy world where unicorns run free and Giorgio Moroder the benevolent ruler of the galaxy. It is also a stunning companion piece to the album that came before it - Seventh Tree. While Seventh Tree manages to be a Goldfrapp downtempo album Head First feels deliberately "uptempo" - if such a genre could exist. The songs are light and breezy, but at the same time elegantly psychedelic and pulsate with life. I have no real criticism of the album. The writing, singing and production are as tight and on-point as ever, the flow is splendid, and every song is enjoyable and accessible. Of all of their albums, it is the one I come back to the most.

"Head First" is the only weak album in Goldfrapp's catalogue, drifting from 80's club anthems to Italo disco genre - yet this pressing is marvelous from head to toe. It includes a free poster & CD of the full album, the 180G pressing is dead quiet and dynamic.

Love the album, but I'm not sure if I have a bad pressing or not. I bought the vinyl absolutely new, sealed, and everything, but i get a skip on a single line on the record.

Might just be my needle, I'm using a portable record player that is nowhere near what I should be using lol

Great album nonetheless!

Goldfrapp's HEAD FIRST mines a new vein of pop: the 80s! And right from "Rocket," the album revels in its shiny synths with plenty of that retro feel: "Alive" sounds like the track Olivia Newton-John never got to record. "Dreaming" and "Hunt" could be the soundtrack for 'Silk Stalkings,' but the title track goes back to perkiness. Alas, overall, it feels as if something is missing on the album, and that's the sense of exploration that Goldfrapp does so well. This album doesn't too many surprises, and it's a bit of a shame. The muttered vocals of "Shiny and Warm" move in the right direction but it's not until "Voicething" that we get to see Goldfrapp playing with their sound -- and succeeding. Let's hope they plunge head first in yet another direction.

Few of their imitators have applied such elegant flair to creating sounds that appear to belong in the past. The motifs and phrases heard on "Head First" do sound as though they could've been recorded thirty years ago, frequently evoking an imprecise sense of déjà vu. But the intricate detailing of the soundscape, the modelling of individual parts is quite contemporary: Goldfrapp's music invokes the past without actually imitating it. Even when refraining from breaking entirely new ground, or merely providing a fresh take on a familiar sound, Goldfrapp still have chunks of lesser bands in their stool… (More: http://writatlarge.blogspot.com/2010/06/head-first.html )

Standout tracks include 'Rocket', 'Believer', 'Head First' and 'Shiny and Warm'.
Rather than another change in direction after the glam of Supernature and the etherealness that was the last album, Seventh Tree, Goldfrapp have evolved Seventh Tree into a more poppy and perhaps mainstream friendly version. A couple of disappointing factors include all the tracks not really standing out from each other and only 8 vocal tracks, the 9th being a vocal exercise type thing (that could have been reserved for a b-side).
I hope Goldfrapp aren't running out of ideas...
