You'd expect a remix album of something as eclectic as Gonjasufi's debut, A SUFI AND A KILLER, to be rather homogenizing, but THE CALIPH'S TEA PARTY, but dint of having an extraordinary line-up of remixers on duty, manages to retain the original's spirit. Mark Pritchard take on "Ancestors" becomes both ambient and orchestral, like a soundtrack to a Sergio Leone film, while Bibio makes "Candylane" in a mellow electro trip. Dam Mantle goes for abstract hip-hop on "Ageing," and Broadcast & The Focus Group throw in everything, including baroque instrumentation and the kitchen sink, into their take on "The Caliph's Tea Party." There's some indie-electro happening on Bear in Heaven's version of "Love of Reign," while Oneohtrix Point Never bring "She's Gone" to the oceanside, with some gentle strumming and seagull cries. The spare breaks puncture the vocals on MRR's mix of "Holidays" and the echoing spaciousness of Shlomo's "Change" show that Gonjasufi's work can handle minimal as well as maximal treatments (such as the surf party groove of Hezus' "My Only Friend"). Dem Hunger's 'Bowel Blood' mix of "Suzie Q" shows off the same spirit of eclecticism and Gonjasufi himself revels in -- mixing in droning drums and an Indian flute. Drink up at this tea party!
