Like most of his contemporaries the Canada born Lightfoot was switched on to guitar singer/songwriting by Dylan. This album was his first for a new label and Warner paid big money to get him. 'If you could read my mind' became a huge hit and forced the album to be renamed. The album is full of gems. 'Your Love's Return' is simply beautiful, 'Sit down young stranger' as effective a war protest song as any and his rendition of Kristofferson's 'Me & Bobby McGee' for me is by far the best version - (sorry Janis). It's easy to underestimate Lightfoot's songwriting because of his simply haunting baritone vocals but his songs are wonderful and Red Shea on guitar and Rick Haynes on bass are both brilliant and sympathetic to the material. If you don't know Lightfoot this is a great place to start.

BTW - Original pressings are the best sound - especially UK. Don't be tempted into reissues ( RSD version is horrible). There is a remastering onto 180gm by Friday Music (who have a good reputation) due out Feb 19th 2016.
