The deadwax on the Canada gold label has the same matrix as the initial US issue: WS 1749 1B (S39369/S39370). There is also a very faint O or 0 (zero) as with the US.

My copy of this was pitched higher than it sounds on the digital versions that I've heard, can anybody give me some insight on this?
Sounded great though.

The best Grateful Dead album in my opinion. Definitely one of their more trippy experiences. I think this album was way ahead of its time and is a huge influence on psychedelic music that followed. Every song is gold but the stand out tracks are "That's it for the other one" and "Alligator"

My copy of this album is on the beige WB label circa 1979 and is the original mix!
Sleeve is as above ie: "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." credit on the right side of the back cover.

Matrixes: K46021+A W-3 & K46021+B W-2 . Both sides are also machine-stamped with the word 'Strawberry'..

Far more expansive and psychedelic than their début, Anthem of the Sun is studio work mixed together with live material. They spent a lot of money doing this. The sound quality's not great, but it's interesting, it's not always clear where the live stuff starts and the studio work stops.

Just like their following album, Aoxomoxoa, Anthem of the Sun was remixed in the early '70s. When collecting albums, to get the original mix, you simply look for the first label pressing, the green "W7" label, that's plain and simple as that. The remixes of Aoxomoxoa were more drastic than on Anthem. On Aoxomoxoa, "Doin' That Rag" had some different arrangements, "Mountains of the Moon" had the female chorus removed, and "What's Become of the Baby" had all the electronic effects removed, reduced to just an electronically modified voice of Jerry Garcia.

With the remix of Anthem, much of it was simply to improve the sound quality, as much of the music is still much the same. I have the remixed version on cassette and the original (green "W7" label) on LP. This is probably the most radical of the Dead albums. Phil Lesh was open to his love of avant garde classical (John Cage, Stockhausen, etc.) and it frequently shows here. Much of this was various live recordings that were spliced in a Los Angeles studios (the reason the earliest Dead albums, as well as Jefferson Airplane, were recorded in L.A. was the apparent lack of decent recording studios in San Francisco prior to 1969 with the opening of Wally Heider). The band never felt too comfortable in the studio preferring a live environment. "That's It for the Other One" might starts off mellow, with Jerry Garcia's unmistakable voice, but I am just rather amazed of the intense passages found throughout. Garcia doesn't even use that trademark lead so common in Dead concerts, but instead that heavily fuzzed lead common to acid rock of the time. They really get off on the deep end, making me think of Krautrock (I am convinced many of the Krautrockers had picked up on this album as much as they did Pink Floyd). "Alligator" shows a heavy percussion experiment, since Mickey Hart just joined the band so he obviously shows his tricks here. "Caution (Do Not Step on Tracks)" has this percussion and spoken dialog. Did Can get this idea for "Pinch" off Ege Bamyasi from this piece? I'm willing to think so. But then "Caution" ends with strange use of guitar feedback and strange electronic effects. This album really has an "everything but the kitchen sink" approach. It was a rather costly experiment that nearly bankrupted this band (no wonder the band turned to a more simplistic country/folk sound with Workingman's Dead and American Beauty). I doubt Anthem of the Sun will convince detractors of the Dead, but for those who want to hear the Dead at their most experimental, go for it.

The notes should read "Original release with the ORANGE Warner Bros label" (for some reason on this record it's more red than orange)

The first UK release was [made and] distribited by Pye Records in London, presumably up until this agreement ended sometime in 1971 when the Kinney corporation entered into a joint distribution and pressing deal with CBS, and the album was then pressed with the green label with the Kinney number K 46021 in the dead wax.

In common with other orange label releases and other UK releases of Warner seven arts/reprise/Elektra albums at the time, the original UK pressing sounds (to my ears) superior to the origanal US green label pressing in terms of clartity and texture and focus. There are a number of reasons why this may be the case, but I suspect it's not so much an EQ issue as a phasing issue - I suspect the US masters may have been processed in some way using the Haeco-csg device in order to sound better on AM radio. The difference is staggering rather than subtle, with the UK release so much more alive-sounding. Sometimes though, because these orange label pressings were so heavy they were prone to non-fill on track one of either side.

Jerry Garcia himself was very disappointed with the [US] pressing: "Our first stereo master tapes preserved some of that quality when you had a good enough playback system to really hear; but everything that happened to it after that, the mastering - all of the things we didn't know about, the part about making discs which we neglected to learn about - that part of it, that was how we found out what doesn't go on a disc. So it was disappointing to us when the disc came out and it sounded muddy and it was terrible and we couldn't understand that all the stuff that - y'know all the stuff that we had put together so carefully didn't really get accross." (Interview - Anthem to Beauty)

It appears the early UK pressings may have escaped the texture-stripping phase treatment (or whatever it was), but later UK pressings with the Kinney number on the cover sound similar to the US pressings.

The album was later remixed in the early 1970s (I believe by the bass player Phil Lesh), but that's a totally different release, with different instruments in different channels, and sometimes different source material used.
