I got to know these tracks, and Fiskerpigens Sang, (although at the time I had hardly any Danish), and Gretes lovely voice and presentation, when I was holydaying in Thisteds Strandhotellet in June 1960. And also listening to live music from The Harmony Boys. Boy did I fall in love with Denmark, and Danish girls.... Now I'm sitting in Shetland, translating Kierkegaard from 1846 Danish into passable modern Dutch. Strange world. O for the days when Danish still had the capital letter at the beginning of the substantive, as German still has. What a brainless, totally unnecessary, tremendous loss! For one thing, most younger Danes will almost automatically look upon older books as old-fashioned, stuffy, and mildly ludicrous. Really, that spelling reform has been a terrible, stupid crime.
