Africa Brazil explains Grupo Batuque’s influences to a fault. “Taruma” has an acoustic guitar over a subdued rhythm section, while “Bautcumba” has a much more complex rhythmic element. There are plenty of those distinctive percussive Brazilian vocals too (such as on “Read Between the Lines”), and they evoke something primal and energetic. In contrast, the unpolished vocals on “A Lua Girou Girou” and “Jongo Jade” have an authentic charm to them, as if they were field recordings. “Umbabaraumba – Ponta De Lanca Africana” takes a familiar melody and rubs it raw with African vibes. This is authentic Brazilian music -- enjoy.
