Recorded 02/17/1982.
2016 Record Store Day reissue of Husker Du's second 7" single. Originally released on New Alliance Records in 1982 and long out of print, this was one of the first blasts of American hardcore punk. Limited to 2000 copies.

Ring wear and creases on cover are part of artwork - i.e. has clearly been scanned from a far-from-mint original.

20 bucks for an ordinary reissue? are they fucking insane?

Hüsker Dü's nascent melodicism explodes to the fore on "In A Free Land," representing the first harbinger of the songcraft that develops on "Zen Arcade" while maintaining their hardcore sound. This is an essential American punk record in my mind. The first time I heard it I wanted to jump up out of my chair. The fidelity is low, very low, but it's good enough. Wish I could go back in time and get them into a proper studio with a skilled engineer. The b-sides are not quite as good, with Grant Hart screaming that nothing will make him happy (join th' club, friend!) on "What Do I Want?" followed by a more straight ahead hardcore number in "M.I.C.". The 5 stars are for "In A Free Land." The 2016 repress seems solid and quiet for your average 45, and is a very welcome reissue.
