Unofficial grey market reissue by Doxy. This compilation is definitely digitally sourced. Sound quality is actually ok. It's pretty much as crisp and clear as it can be with this era recordings. Some background noise of the original recordings has been removed, so the sound is definitely smooth. Unfortunately there's some audible high peak distortion, especially on louder vocal passages. I've compared this vinyl box with Smithsonian Folkways CD box from 1997. Although Smithsonian Folkways version had significantly more background noise, high peak distortion was missing. Distortion on this compilation is apparently due to bad mastering.

Packaging of this box set is really nice. Hardcover box feels rather sturdy. Box resembles old gramophone record folder. Each disc is housed in its own sleeve with polylined inner sleeve. Pressing quality is good as well. Records are flat, properly centered and silent.

Originally there was only three volumes in Anthology of American Folk Music. Fourth volume of the series was issued on Revenant as late as 2000. This 8 LP box contains all those four volumes.

Musically this compilation is an excellent cross-section of traditional North American music. Many of these track are essential performances in their genres. Since all four volumes are equally strong, it's highly recommended to acquire them all. When choosing which version to get it all comes down to personal preference. If background noise of old 78s bothers you, this smoother sounding Doxy version is a good option If you don't mind background noise, Smithsonian Folkways boxset and Revenant's 2 CD set is probably the way to go.

The folks at Mississippi Records really put a lot of love and passion into this Folkways Records reissue. Originally compiled by Harry Smith and released in 1952. The music is never short of beautiful and inspirational.

The packaging is very sturdy and nice. I've never seen a box designed this way, where the sleeves are attached to it and not loose. It's very handy.
The actual art-work on it is a little silly, and the font on the side of the box looks like what you'd expect to find on a children's book. It was clearly designed by someone with a talent more for practical matters, and a lack of taste.
The recordings are all great, of course. The price is a little steep, and it may have been more economical just to buy each volume individually, but I don't regret the purchase.
