Hate Eternal are known for one thing, unrelenting death metal. The group hardly strays from full throttle speeds and dynamics, which I have found to become monotonous on previous releases. The song writing on I, Monarch still focuses on high BPM's, brutal riffs and blasts beats, but there are more dynamics on this release than their previous works. One main reason for this I credit with Derek Roddy's impressive drum performance. The drum parts are well thought out, introducing new blast beat techniques using auxiliary snares and multi-effect pedals. Besides new equipment Mr. Roddy also finds more occasions to compliment Rutan's riffs without constant blast beats than he himself or other drummers have done on previous Hate Eternal albums. Those familiar with Hate Eternal know to expect non-stop brutal death metal, but I, Monarch is definitely the groups most varied album.
