Heartthrob's debut, DEAR PAINTER, PAINT ME, starts off quietly enough with the low throb of "Futures Past." But once the kick drum and synth stabs come in, you're in completely different territory from the typical M_nus release. Whereas many M_nus albums have their tracks segue imperceptibly from one to the next, Heartthrob seems to draw clearer distinctions between tracks instead. Indeed, whereas subtle minimalism is the primary watchword, Heartthrob pushes the levels up on his layers, so that the sounds come across big, rather than stripped away. "Signs," for instance, has a perky melodic line that seems to run through all the filters, and "Blind Item" even suggests hints of Detroit. "Heading for a Heartbreak" adds a funky element, just when things should be winding down. A portrait slightly different from what you might expect.
