** UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW **

I have since managed to procure another NM copy of this record. It plays without any of the issues that I mentioned earlier and is a super-clean listening experience.

That said, there is some crackle on side 2 but this could be resolved with a good clean. Even so, it’s really minor (to me anyway)

This means that two conclusions can be reached:

1) There are good and bad copies out there

2) ALWAYS ask the seller to play grade when buying this particular record. It is the only way to determine what you're going to get

Listening to it right now while writing this comment on a VPI Scout + Nagaoka MP-200, Hope’s voice comes through as super-smooth and caressing. It is absolutely worth finding a good copy so don't give up.

I am putting this up to warn people about the apalling quality of the original vinyl (2001).

Obviously we all know the music is fabulous and in terms of mastering, the LP is soft, warm and gentle - nothing "digital" about the sound at all. An excellent example of how vinyl SOUND should be done in contemporary times.

However, in terms of the physical aspects of the LP, it is riddled with no-fill issues, much worse than any record I've ever heard. On almost every track this ugly phenomenon appears at least once. For those who don't know what it is, it's to do with insufficient heat used in the manufacturing process which results in a crunching/ripping sound when you play back the record. You can physically see it in the affected groove as a string of silver "beads". It is REALLY distracting but because everything else about this record stuns, I live with it.

Just want to make sure others are aware of this problem before they shell out big bucks. Perhaps we should all write to Rough Trade requesting a good quality reissue as one of the other commenters suggests

Smooth transition. Album was received in MINT condition and sounded perfect. Shipping from Canada to Oklahoma took about a week. Highly recommend

Incredible record. So contemplative, sparse, and gentle. In my opinion the beautiful droney acoustic guitar and string arrangements fit Hope's voice even more so than the bluesy minimalism of David Roback.

I've owned tens of thousands of records and I count this easily among the top ten in my collection. There is no other record anything like it, It blows away the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Mazzy Star records. It's a very sad joke that you can't get this album at any record store anywhere. Unfortunately we appear doomed to hear this on crappy cold digital sources. I bought this for 10$ on vinyl, brand new at a show, and the crap quality of the vinyl made it sound used and abused. Someone smart should reissue this album on decent vinyl. I would buy ten of them in a heartbeat. If you like Mazzy Star (and i do like their first LP very very much), and have not heard this record, (maybe you thought the girl singing was named 'Mazzy Star'), you must track down a copy of Hope's first Warm Inventions album (on cd, pirated tape, or on youtube) immediately. Like this f*cking second. ... Oddly her second Warm Inventions record did little for me. This record is up there with the Nick Drakes and Tia Blakes of the world. The guest work by Bert Jansch is one of its' heavenly charms, but there are many many more wrapped up inside.
