Whenever obscure bands come up in conversations, it seems to be a law that someone remarks, “well, maybe they’re obscure for a reason.” In the case of Horde Catalytique Pour La Fin, an obscure one-shot French band, this is certainly true, but not in the way you’d expect. While I love their music, I have to admit that it is perhaps the most obtuse music I’ve ever heard. Seriously, this stuff makes Merzbow and Nurse With Wound look positively commercial. If you gave this CD to a thousand people, probably no more than five would be able to listen to it all the way through without causing themselves (or the CD player) serious injury. Of those five, maybe one would like it, if you’re lucky. This is music only for the most adventurous of listeners. For everyone else, it is a waste of money.

Even though I love this album, I cannot recommend it. I really can’t. This music will drive you insane in the best case scenario. Basically, all it consists of is saxophone that sounds like an animal dying with random drumming/percussion arising whenever it feels like it. Backing this “core” are various noises and instruments appearing, like the drums, at random. The sound is that of radiation tinged survivors of a nuclear holocaust playing instruments they’ve chanced upon as they near their deaths, as the band’s name (translated to: Catalytic Horde for the End) would suggest. I am almost certain that this album is the result of a jam session (though it doesn’t jam in any traditional sense). There is no sense of structure to it, no hooks, no nothing. Really, nothing happens over the course of the entire album.

All that said, however, I must return to the fact that I really like Gestation Sonore. I can’t really say why, other than that I find it intriguing and interesting. Something about it manages to grab me, but I honestly have no idea what it is. I decided to try this album simply because I felt like hearing something new, and I got lucky in that I liked it. Buy this at your own risk. It is an awesome piece of unencumbered music that does not abide by rules; as such, it will alienate fans of all but the most extreme music. Don’t expect to like it if you decide to try it.
