A great compilation of the work of one of the best and most one of a kind bluesmen ever. Sound quality isn't always top notch, as would be expected from one of these cheaper reissues labels, but then again, neither were most of the original recordings.
Still, not a bad way to get into the Wolf's music.

A voice like a tenement block and carrying as many dark histories with it as said precinct: how on earth can you, well you know, four stars? Feels like I am getting old. But then five stars for whom?
The sound on these records has a lot more oomph! (like bass and physicality and less treble) than for example the 1971 Syndicate Chapter release: Going Back Home. Speaking of which track: Going Back Home. Try to find it somewhere. On this double LP it is the very last track: this brooding atmosphere built up by the syncopated drums and the immensely percussive guitar counterpoints, then after one and a half minutes at least a rhythmic release, but still despair over having to leave. Plus you have "Who will be next?" and "Who's been talking?"
Muddy Waters may have been the Godfather of Chicago blues: legend has it (can't be bothered to verify it right now, that's why I write legend) you had to approach Muddy if you wanted access for recording at Chess. And Muddy did record a fantastic body of work, a lot of early stuff with the utterly unbelievable Little Walter capable of making his tiny instrument sound like it was weighing 6 tons. Plus Muddy according to my knowledge was closest to the core elements and the blueprint for the rock'n'roll band by 1954: two guitars, upright bass and drums (plus all the other stuff like OTIS SPANN on piano!). So I accept that Muddy Waters was huge and influential: great compositions, excellent and lovely guitar playing, but ... Compared to Howlin Wolf his voice sounds (if you pardon the comparison) like he was earning his living with loaded dice whereas Howlin Wolf at least went for armed robbery. Plus Howlin Wolf had the incredible Hubert Sumlin as a mainstay in his band. Very little that Hubert recorded with others or under his own name bears comparison with what he did with Burnett. But together they often did sound genuinely stellar:
This record has a gret many great songs (no liner notes, no recording dates or personel given!) and among the great songs at least "You'll be mine" and "Hidden Charms" missing. On the other hand: why should any one record contain all the great stuff by Howlin Wolf?
From the moment he stepped into Sam Philips' Sun Studio (exactly that very man, but 3 years earlier) this proved to be a great voice: not as sexy as the one of Elvis, but then again, thank God, sexy isn't the sole criterion. (At least seven stars on a five star scale!)
