Isan's first album for Morr Music, SALAMANDER, has all the hallmarks that they would develop over the years: bucolic melodies, chilled beats. Right from "Peg," the mellowness starts in, even before the curious squelches take over. "Clipper," though, has a hymn-like organ righteousness, while "Lid Farmer" has a quiet simplicity: guitar, beat, synth background. "Twentyfive Thirtyone" offers a slightly glitchier melody, if still sleepy, and "Still, Blue" picks up the pace, again, slightly. And I suppose "Happy Pet in a Car" is the closest Isan will ever come to funk -- still pretty sweet, though, especially with the woodwind tones. "Braille Foundry" closes the album just like "Lid Farmer," taking its own sweet time. This, I think, is what Isan does best: take it easy, take it slow.

"Peg" from Salamander was the first ISAN track I have ever heared - and I bought all their records I could find since then. Salamander features a variety of ISAN styles - from mellow and ambient "Twentyfive Thirtyone", to dark and grunting "Snot", to funky and relaxed "Happy Pet in a Car". Salamander is a good introduction to ISAN: it samples many varied styles that were developed in group's five other albums. This still remains my favourite ISAN record to date.
