Ian Simmonds returns under his own name for RETURN TO X, as "Fathom's Down" brings the bassline and harpsichord, which is then perfected in style with "Swingin Millie." Simmonds keeps the jazz freeform here, with off-kilter rhythms, as on "No Bamboo," and unpredictable morphs, as "Ocean Hill" goes from almost ambient into a grooving swing. "Jet" takes off in a cloud of cigarette smoke, while "Blues For V.C." starts off slightly more digital, with a crisp martial snare that warms up as the melody comes in. "The Manta," similarly, swerves woozily, and "Body Sound" thrums with mad energy. But "Alvin's Blues" deserves a special note, a sharp beam of jazz, with a looped piano line to drive the track forward. Sure, this album is slightly less focused than Simmond's previous, but it offers up a different sort of mood.
