Absolutely outstanding. The Pyramids played a special brand of spiritually-informed ecstatic jazz music in the mid '70s, producing three albums on their own private label. They went away for about forty years, but re-emerged in 2011 to continue their vision. This vision included fusing the elements of African polyrhythms with funk, free jazz, dub, medicine chants, and space-age themes. In 2018, they recorded An Angel Fell, which discovers the perfect ratios of each of these elements and unifies them in a single, coherent statement, while somehow maintaining an accessibility that welcomes all listeners. A crowning achievement, indeed.

Spanning four album sides, the music here is trippy, far-out, and takes its time to make its point. From the opening guitar licks of "Tinoge", through the soothing rhumba of "Papyrus", to the afrobeat stomp of "Warrior Dance", the music touches many bases while collectively establishing a relaxed, patient approach so lacking in most modern music. The messages are intense and urgent, but they need not sprint to get them to you. The result is happily intoxicating. Every one of the players were totally "in the pocket" during these sessions—remarkably tuned in not only with each other, but seemingly the entire cosmos as a whole. Though he didn't actually play on the album, the fingerprints of Malcom Catto (of The Heliocentrics) are all over this thing. The vinyl sounds amazing and Lewis Heriz's painted artwork shows beautifully across the gatefold.

Real heads will recognize this as a classic for years to come. Get you some.
