The thing about Iron Maiden fans is that (and I can't remember which band member said this) every one of them has a different favourite album - and if two fans do have the same favourite then they're bound to have a different favourite song.
That is probably why Iron Maiden are such a great and enduring band - and The X Factor is an example of an album that illustrates how they once did things just a little bit differently.
For those not in the know, X Factor was their first release with Blaze on vocals. Traditionalists hated his deep, brooding vocals and rejected this album as "not" being one to bear a true Iron Maiden sound.
Well codswallop to that I say! Personally this is one of my favourite albums ever. As far as Iron Maiden releases go it certainly is their darkest, with some inredibly dark subject matter and moody song arrangements (even the art work and the band photos got a facelift on the more sinister side of things). Unlike Bruce's colourful vocal style, I felt that Blaze's vocals worked just as well, though in a different way.
Definitely a unique album where they also tried a couple of new things (Steve Harris really shows us why he's a first rate bass player on the track "Blood On The World's Hands").
But who am I to say that my opinion is better than anybody's? As I said before, being a Maiden fan is very much a personal experience. To each their own I say. I got into them just before they released this and I've loved them ever since. I'm sure the same holds true for fans who did the same 15 years before me.
Regardless, I think this is a great album.
