Not as genre bending as the later Island releases which are timeless nevertheless its still very well executed jamming pseudo prog rock. There are NO synthesizers and organs on this release which makes JW stand out a bit in the pantheon of Brit prog bands of that time-line. Lots of percussion as one would expect from JW but you can sort of get the feeling theres a bit of angst to stretch the compositional nature further. The vocals are not the high point nor the blues based songs and I am glad later albums minimized and removed the whole atypical rock vocal aspect out of the JW music writing.

This is likely the last concession Jade Warrior would give to commercial attempts (IMHO). Tracks like 'We Have Reason To Believe' would fit in almost any conventional rock band repertoire, but after this, they not only pushed the envelope, they tore it up. Still, 'Released' stands out among other rock bands of that era, even if you overlook the Progressive Rock-length 'Barazinbar'.

Exotic material still rules on this second effort, as a look at the titles will readily confirm. More heavy riffing, this time, but still alternating with etherical episodes, that are less in number, but even more gossamer than on the debut. Bride of summer only just stirs in a pool of silence. Flute parts dominate the sound as before and the tendency to play with dynamic oppositions reign supreme on the instrumental Water curtain cave. Philosophical points of view about the nature of man can be found almost anywhere in the lyrics, but luckily not overly so. Only the very length of the African tinged Barazinbar irritates. This is at times almost ''world-music''-rock, long before the term became common currency. A fine album.
