By 93, Ambient was starting to spawn its own subgenres, Ambient Dub was one of them, and this album highlights this permeable nature of ambient music. Jam & Spoon Launched their 2001 and 2002 albums almost together, 2001 has an odd electropop slash prototrance sound, bubbly but with some very interesting tracks that would comfortably land in the proggessive house style that dominated the american west coast dance parties/clubs at the time. This album 2002 has references to Carlos Castaneda, LSD, and psychedelics in general; which go well with touches of dub, folk, and an almost 80's Japanese techno pop (think of YMO'S Sakamoto'S solo albums from 70s-80s) present throughout the album. Playful but very mature sounding material, tracks range from short vocal pieces to long, morphing and evolving ones that take the listener on journeys.

So good! What a magnificent, alienating, uncomfortable, psychedelic atmosphere in this record. Very high quality ambient music.

TRIPOMATIC FAIRYTALES 2002, the ambient companion to Jam & Spoon's debut, starts with the atmospheric French spoken word and deep bass hits of "Hermaphrodite," which leads into the chorale-samples and prog-rock guitars of "N.A.S.A. Nocturnal Audio Sensory Awakening," which eventually swings its way into some dub breaks (and are those the synths from "Stella" in the background there?). But they have more tricks up their sleeves: "LSD Nikon" is a jazz-inflected agglomeration of jazz drum and filtered soul samples, while "Salinas Afternoon" is like bottling sunshine. Okay, so "The Future Is In Small Hands" suffers from somewhat trite lyrics (the more romantic "Secret Kind of Love" fares much better), but the telephone tones and 'hellos' of "V. Angel. Is Calling" gradually burst into bubbles of strings and synthetic flutes. "Ancient Dream" is indeed dreamy, a looping journey across what sounds like a Southwestern landscape, while "I Saw the Future" starts in a clatter of cymbals, soon shifting into ambient dub with a low throb and some ethnic chanting. "World Of X-T-C" ends the album on a bit of dub-pop, which is actually rather fun. A good exploration of the other side of Jam & Spoon.

"Tripomatic Fairytales 2002" is the sequel of "Tripomatic Fairytales 2001". The main difference: "2002" is ambient, sometimes spiritual oriented. No beats, or so little. If you can accept such a thing, then take a seat, the trip shall begin.
"Hermaphrodite" is an ambiguous form of human. Both male and female. Issabelle presents the opus with a mysterious French text (here translated): "In front of each sorcerer, a hole, at the bottom of which the male and female of the nature, represented by the hermaphrodite roots of pyotl, sleeps in the matter, i.e. in the concrete." Are we in a forest? In space? Maybe everythere at the same time. N.A.S.A will wake you up, slowly, in the night. You have a mission. But which one? This long composition soon incorpore a dubby beat and classic chorus chants. The sound of a plane bring the idea of a trip. "LSD Nikon" is that trip. Are you holding the camera? Are you the camera yourself? And where are you anyway? You keep hearing a woman singing... but a filter prevents you to identify the reality. Take as many pictures you like. "The Future Is In Small Hands" brings Helmer back, but this time as a singer. Later, the rain starts to fall. It's the afternoon. An uncredited Helmer quote follows: "The sad master was asked himself a question: what is Buddha?". As the master walks away, you wonder: is he holding the answer to the question or not? You will never know. "V. Angel. Is Calling" tells the "story" of a deceased person, trying to reach someone using the phone. But being decorported, the soul is not able to talk, and he will probably never achieve his goal. "Words And Dana" is a short interlude. She throws something at the listener. Her shoe or something. Was that all a dream? Maybe. "Ancient Dream" repeats a piano line. Nostalgia take your soul away for a moment. It's all about the past. What about the future? "I Saw The Future" is not concrete: the music, the impressions are yours; this is your future. "Castaneda Future Illuminations" is like a freaky spiritual message, left on an answering machine. "Secret Kind Of Love" the only other vocal track on 2002. "World Of X-T-C" brings back the dub and closes the album. Is it about the feeling... or the drugs? You decide.

Despite it sounding a bit cheesy by todays standards, this is a great chill out album, theres a fair bit of self-indulgent noodling from J&S - for example 'LSD Nikon' is just some effected camera shutters noises. But 'N.A.S.A. Nocturnal Audio Sensory Awakening' and 'I Saw The Future' are lovely subtle sprawling tracks with real electronic soul. The vocal tracks are bit ill-advised, in particular on 'The Future Is In Small Hands' where the lyrics are a mite clumsy, meanwhile the final track is bouncy electronic reggae with OTT ragga toasting, but still great fun and a jolly end to a great album to listen to on a summer holiday.
