The stereophonics of the original recording sounded rather juvenile, but hey, it was 1970 and people were learning to play with right left phasing. The Mobile Fidelity recording has done more than justice to this great album, sounding rich and wonderful, sonically more full with a deeper separation, meaning that if you think you know the album, think again, because this gem is like nothing you've ever heard before.

I’m sure that fans have stumbled upon the issue regarding the censored versions of Rides Again, with the abbreviated story going something like this this: All original first edition versions of this album contain a suite at the end of side one entitled “The Bomber.”  Only the original first pressings of the album contain this three part suite, as shown in the track list accompanying this entry, which includes a 1:25 minute segment titled “Bolero,” suggesting a total running time for the suite of 7:04 minutes.

John Revell's estate threatened legal action for the non-authorized use of “Bolero” when the first records hit the store shelves. Therefore, the powers that be, rather than fighting or paying, removed “Bolero” from all future pressings, shortening the suite to 5:46 minutes. That being said, ABC Records apparently was not able to get new disc labels printed in time to comply for the second edition, the censored pressings, many copies were issued with the original spindle label listing “Bolero,” even though it was edited out for those copies. So, just because you find a copy with “Bolero” printed on the label does not guarantee that it is present.

Now, as to the Mobile High Fidelity vinyl pressing, I can assure you that the full original album has been reissued with brilliant sound quality.  The matter was settled with the estate of John Revell, with the estate coming to realize that free publicity is better than royalties sometimes, as fans of Rides Again were actively seeking out and paying for copies.

James Gang - Rides Again. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab UDSACD 2195.Geffen Records 821797219563 2017 US. I have been waiting for this since 1979 and if the Limited Edition of 2000 listed on the back is correct I am lucky. This is one of the finest albums out of the 70's. Now the countdown to the vinyl release.

this album came out in 1969, not 1970. I know. I was there.

Excellent underrated forgotten album. This record maybe gets lost because there were a lot of rock groups in the '70s that had their radio hit and not much else. James Gang Rides again starts off with the classic "Funk #49" that everyone has heard on the radio and in numerous soundtracks to tv/movies but it keeps going with many strong songs afterwards. The music is varied and shows a range of talents. Of course Joe Walsh is the biggest name from the group and he went onto experience solo fame. On this album he is the principle song writer and really shows here how diverse and complex his song craft was. He goes from hard rockers to thoughtful ballads. Its to bad many have not heard these great tunes past "Funk #49." Do yourself a favor and pick it up on vinyl, you will wonder where this album was your whole life.

"James Gang Rides Again"
ABC black label
Notes on Columbia Pitman pressings

When the "Bolero" segment was hastily removed from "The Bomber" medley (August 1970), there was some initial confusion at the pressing plants contracted by ABC Records. In some cases labels changed, but the metal parts did not. Or vice-versa. As a consequence, mislabeled transitional pressings exist.

Records coming out of the Columbia Pitman (NJ) plant were no exception. In fact, some Pitman pressings of "James Gang Rides Again" are unique in that they are the only known pressings of the album (on any variation of the ABC black label) where even though "B. Bolero" is no longer listed on the Side A label, the "Bolero" segment still plays on the record. If you are actually examining the vinyl, it is easy to see which Pitman record you are holding. On a pressing WITHOUT "Bolero", track 3 "Woman" and track 4 "The Bomber" will appear nearly the same in banded width. On a pressing WITH "Bolero", "The Bomber" will be distinctly wider than "Woman". If you are shopping online (that is, sight unseen) for a copy WITH "Bolero" (or for that matter, hoping to avoid one), the affected Pitman pressings will bear these matrix numbers in the runouts:

ABC black label WITH the New York address perimeter print:

Side A (will be one of the following)*:
ABCX 711A-1B
ABCX 711A-1B P

Side B (will be one of the following)*:
ABCX 711B-1A
ABCX 711B-1B

ABC black label WITHOUT the New York address perimeter print:

Side A (will be one of the following)*:
ABCX 711A-1A
ABCX-711A-1B

Side B*:
ABCX 711B-1B

Note that in every instance above, the runout prefix contains the letter 'X'.

*Other transitional Pitman pressings may exist. Please contact me through the Discogs console if you discover one!
