These two brief but impressive collaborations between American and Italian avant-garde explorers are both devotional pieces.

On side A, Jarboe recites her composition ‘The Ferryman’ with guitar and keyboard backing by Father Murphy. The poem considers the position of the pilgrim navigating the ocean of life. The spoken word delivery is adorned by wordless vocals, acoustic guitar, organ, keyboards and atmospheric effects. The lyric also occurs on the third track of Jarboe’s 2009 album DaksinaKali as “Ferryman of the Soul.”

Side B, titled ‘Truth or Consequences,’ is a Father Murphy composition based on guitar, organ, keyboard and ambient noise, on which Jarboe plays the piano. This experimental ‘art rock’ track starts with an eruption of metallic clangs before unfolding in piano, keyboard and organ patterns. Static noise makes up one of its sonic dimensions while the interaction of chanting and Jarboe’s vocalizing conjures an air of ritual.
