On TATTOO, Jay-Jay Johanson doesn't start moving away from the Bristol trip-hop as much as he embellishes it with musical jewels, even though the rhythms stick to that pattern. So, even though "Even in the Darkest Hour" has has the theremin scratches, it carries more pop romanticism. "Quel Dommage" starts out with the scratches again, but leads into a bastard chanson instead. Heartbreak seems to be Johanson's default style, and it suits him beautiful on "Milan. Madrid. Chicago. Paris." "She's Mine But I'm Not Hers" sounds somewhat like a less experimental Lamb, while "Sunshine of Your Smile" is a dub rapture. "A Letter to Lulu-Mae" goes for more country-folk, and "Friday at Rex" leans towards electro, a direction Johanson will explore more fully on his next album. But my favorite, however, has to be the bilingual interrogation noir of "Jay-Jay Johanson," a strange concept that somehow works. It's a clever and perfectly-executed track.
