It's a very fine album which actually deserves a vinyl reissue (hello RSD?), but the eccentric ratings are probably due to a few factors...

For a start, the vocals. Yes, Natacha Atlas brings her stunning eastern promise to C'est la vie. And while there are other impressive vocals on offer here, you are left with the thought that AIR influenced Jarre almost as much as he influenced them in their childhood years.

For example, "Love Love Love" may as well be a b-side from Moon Safari. "Give Me A Sign" sounds like AIR in a nightclub. "Gloria, Lonely Boy" could be a Jarre/AIR collaboration.

Other than the vocals (which I really don't mind, by the way), it's got a very "dance" vibe through a lot of tracks. Now, Jarre helped create the dance music scene (specfically Trance), but it does seem awkward when an innovator tries to jump on his own creation.

I guess I'm being very critical of this album, when I do enjoy it a lot. But it's not really the Jarre that I love. It really just sounds like Jean-Michel getting "with the times" (in this case, turn-of-the-millenium times).

As I said at the beginning, it IS a fine album. The highlight for me is the absolutely stunning "Millions Of Stars", which will appeal to every real fan of Jarre.

When Jean-Michel does it right, it is a thing of pure beauty.

A refined, complex, and overall astonishingly produced piece of art. Do not pay attention to the strange ratings here, it is one of the strongest electronic releases back in the 90-ties. For those who know...

Very good album. Amazing in it's time back in 2000. I was blown away Jarre would do something like this and sound so fresh and out-do everyone else. It was ahead of it's time. Interestingly this seems to be the only album Jarre did by using a DAW system, lite version of Protools. All the other albums have been done by using physical synthesizers and sound boxes, even Teo&Tea is done this way. It also has singing on it which you don't actually note much. Top notch album one of the best Jarre ever did if not the best. Fans of old Jarre were probably shocked and did not understand the genious of this for it's completely different from the analog sounds of the classic albums. So good most artists never reach this level of quality and imagination. He should have continued this journey and never go into that chillout territory and redoing his old material, but nobody's perfect. 5/5
