Jean-Michel Jarre – Planet Jarre (50 Years Of Music)
Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
This release does not state some particularities between original recorded tracks and some new versions. There are 5 new mixes or re-recordings. These new versions mix elements from the old tapes with new audio. An example of that is "Rendez-Vous 4", in which you can listen to the original main synth with new aggregated synths; another example can be heard in "Magnetic Fields 2", in which you can spot the drums, synth solos and other stuff from the "The Concerts In China" tapes, with new elements on top of it. All these new recordings have been worked to fit a compilation and they end abruptly ("Zoolookologie" oddly ends in a leading tone note, instead of the tonic note). There is one track that has been mislabeled for another mix of its own, "Revolutions, Revolutions". Five tracks have been short-cut, some with huge amount of music thrown away off the original track and also, some removal of track introduction; the song that was least short cut was "Last Rendez-Vous", which is the 2004 AERO version. Track "Music For Supermarkets (Demo Excerpt)" does not state that it is a actually the quiet experimental "Part I" from that same album.

An OK compilation of JMJ classics, newer tracks and rarities. Sadly, I found the pressing quality very poor. A few clicks and pops (especially the first two vinyl), warping is present, centre out on one and a few aubible pressing defects too. Tried two copies, but both had these various faults.

This is of course an excellent release filled with quality tracks. But I am nevertheless disappointed by it, seeing the sections the release is divided into I took for granted that he had reworked and melded the tracks into each other. But from what I can hear the tracks for the most part are just the same versions as on the albums (with silence between). As is this is like an updated and extended version of the Images (1991) compilation, with some exclusive tracks at the end.
If the man himself is claiming this is an album and not a compilation, he is doing injustice to long time fans who already have all the albums.

Thanks for the insight Neasden.
One thing's got me puzzled however....
According to the track listing Disc 1 of the 2CD set runs for 83:51.
I thought 80 minutes was the maximum amount of music a factory pressed CD could hold?
Has Jarre overcome this limitation in some way,
or are we looking at a typing error in the track listing?

Going undocumented in this compilation:
New re-recordings or new mixes:
Zoolookologie
Magnetic Fields 2
Fourth Rendez-Vous
Chrolonology Part 4
Oxygene Part 8
Mislabelling of tracks:
Revolutions instead of Revolution, Revolutions.
(The version without the turkish flute, short-cut).
Drastic shotcurt of tracks:
Ethnicolor - Mostly the first 3 minutes.
Chronology Part 1 - Only the second movement, shortened.
Oxygene Part 20 - Doesn't include the intro of the track.
Waiting For Cousteau - A 3 minute edit (out of the 46 minutes).
Last Rendez Vous - it is the 2004 AERO version, intro short cut.
Last but not least, the "I Got you!" moment:
Music For Supermarkets
Not the marvelous opening overture.
It's the "Part I" movement.
That's why I never care about JMJ compilations.

Surely listing this release in the Albums section is a mistake. By any definition, this is a COMPILATION.

I thought the arrangement into sections on this was a nice approach.
I liked the attempt to key match between some songs.
For me edm style production makes JMJ music very bland.
I used to DJ, I have listened to edm since early 90s.
For me it is now very repetitive with cheesy buildups which I find a cheap gimmick.
There are so many amazing edm songs and JMJ is very late to try making edm.
I honestly think JMJ is not an interesting edm artist, I skip those songs.
The selected excerpt from Musique Pour Supermarché seemed useless.
Why not just release the whole original Musique Pour Supermarché remastered and be done with it already?
Overall for me this compilation wasn't interesting enough to listen when I can just hear the original versions on albums.
I'd like to see a compilation mixing pieces which have had less attention recently like:
Oxygene VII (after 8:00)
Oxygene IX
Oxygene XIII
Equinoxe II
Equinoxe III
Les Chants Magnetiques I (after 7:10)
Les Chants Magnetiques III
The Overture
Fifth Rendez-vous (I, II or III)
Wooloomooloo
...and the gloriously beautiful and futuristic:
Ethnicolor II
There's beautifully crafted songs that are less played that he perhaps ignores in favour of the usual songs..
I want less of the usual songs and no bland EDM.
I realise my opinion means nothing but it's what I would like to see.
