Probably Jeff Mills best "album". Unlike many of his CD releases this one seems like it was actually composed as an LP as opposed to a compilation of previously released tracks. The music is from the period where he was pushing the boundaries of techno music but before he went into his more recent "soundtrack"/art gallery mode. What I like about the tracks on this CD is they are minimalistic, but fairly detailed and very carefully constructed. The percussion is often based on single melodic notes cut/sampled and sequenced into a pulse beat while loops are subtly added and subtracted. Then you have the gliding synths (and even some synth strings) from classic Detroit techno either in the background or foreground. Sometimes a repetitive loop will stick around for awhile but it's very apparent that it was done on purpose. There are some nice details in the low end that you'll miss if you don't have the volume up high enough (or you are listening to crappy mp3s). A good pair of headphones are probably your best choice here. Also, the disc is the perfect length, not too short, not too long. Highly recommended.
