With Crown Of Creation The Jefferson Airplane finally brought us a very sonically psychedelic album, complete with tiny eggs hidden among and between the tracks, fledgling overlays of sound, atmospheric meanderings that moved from the right and left speakers. Most of our stereos at the time could not appreciate the music that was being played through them, it was albums like this that made us start to demand better and more enhanced equipment.

But back to the record. Crown Of Creation is enticingly compelling, beginning with the cover art, where the members of the Airplane are imaged inside the explosion of an atomic bomb ... sparking questions such as, "Was this meant to evoke the notion of the birth of a new sound, that of a new generation, the war that was raging in Vietnam, or just their feel for the impending doom of not only the 60’s but for life as we have known it on this planet." Within the context of these grooves, the Airplane pushed the boundaries of philosophical thought in their way, questioning values, but never really supplying any answers. "Star Truck" is a prime example of this ... "it takes time to love, an open mind to love, but who has time on their hands ...” feeling the loss of the 60’s both as a band and as part of a movement that was supposed to change the world, yet in the end didn't. Instead, the war, drugs and disillusion took their toll on all of us, and The Jefferson Airplane just happened to be there to capture this moment in time, as they'd managed to do on all of their proceeding albums, a penchant for capturing the moment. In the midst of all this confusion, and the 60's were very confusing times, a number like "If You Feel" stood as a beacon of hope that things might get back on track ... "if you feel like love, make it, make love flying ..." though in reality the song was merely about having sex while on LSD, with many thinking acid was the answer to all of the questions. If only they could get everyone to trip out, the Airplane touted we’d all be on the same wave length. Too bad it didn’t work. But the spirit was there and that’s what counts.

One can hear the sound of Hot Tuna beginning to take form here with the muted guitar work that rolls under the surface, with some harder edges.

A fine body of work that will stand the test of time.

*** The Fun Facts: The “crown” of creation in the Judeo / Christian creation story, is in fact people. In the narrative of the Abrahamic religions, God created human beings as his capstone act after creating everything else in the universe, and he made them “in his own image and likeness.” Like God, people can create worlds of their own, and during those heady days, we certainly attempted that.
