This is a very odd record which was released on an obscure label in Detroit – and the music probably couldn't have been created anywhere else. Jerry Green, who used to be a member of Motown act The Contours, delivers an uptempo modern soul number here with classic Motor City songwriting stylings all over it and strong, heartfelt vocals that really justify the nickname "The Voice Master" which is printed on the labels. What makes the record a bit of an eccentricity, however, is the backing track. It's purely electronic, and very stripped-down and raw at that – think late 70's/early 80's minimal synth experiments – and even more strangely, the unpolished, lo-fi proto-techno sounds somehow work very well in this context, and make this record worthy of the tag "machine soul". The sound quality is very rough and certainly won't make a hi-fi enthusiast wet himself, but that just adds to the overall feel in my opinion. A one-of-a-kind record that fuses Detroit's most prominent musical traditions – soul and electronic music – to unusual and rewarding results.
