Sonny Boy Williamson (2) With Brian Auger & The Trinity / Joe Harriott / Alan Skidmore / Jimmy Page – Don't Send Me No Flowers

Notes:
Of the many obscure projects Jimmy Page was associated with prior to Led Zeppelin, one of the most notable was a studio session he recorded live alongside noted keyboardist Brian Auger, and famed bluesman, Sonny Boy Williamson.
The session took place at IBC Studios on January 28, 1965.
Those present at the session included, Jimmy Page on guitar, Brian Auger on organ, Ricky Brown on bass Mickey Waller on drums along with Joe Harriot & Alan Skidmore on saxophone, and Sonny Boy taking up vocal and harmonica.
While doing press for the documentary film "It Might Get Loud" Jimmy Page also recalled the session with Sonny Boy Williamson: "The one that was done live with The Yardbirds
hadn’t come out. It was our manager who called me. I was a studio musician, at the time, and Sonny Boy was living in his flat. Somebody told me once that they went to the house and they heard Sonny Boy plucking a live chicken. I don’t know how true that was. That didn’t happen when I was there. Sonny Boy and myself rehearsed these numbers in the
manager’s flat and, by the time we got into the studio a couple days later, Sonny Boy had forgotten all of the arrangements of what we were going to do. It was cool. Good music comes out of that."

Wow! the price on these. I bought the Marmalade 608004 release in 1968. Dug it out just looking through my blues.

DON"T buy 'Special Early Works' versions, terrible pressing, rubbish sound!!!! Original (which is the version I am reviewing here) and "The Jam Session' versions much better, I don't know about the others.

These 'Special Early Works...' versions have very poor sound. The original (very expensive) and 'The Jam Session' versions have much better sound quality. I don't know about the other ones, but avoid this one unless you want your music to sound hallow and rubbishy. I was shocked when I first heard a different version, before I had always thought this was just a poorly done recording. Nope, just a crappy repressing. Is an extremely excellent album otherwise.

This stomping blues album is a musical roller coaster like you haven't heard many. From the slow and down beat depressing atmosphere of Don't Send My No Flowers, to the energetic finale of Getting Out Of Town, every single track on this album is just spot on. The spontaneous intensity and the emotion in these recordings is almost touchable and the classic heart felt harmonica blues of Sonny Boy in is later years blends perfectly with the raw blues rock energy of young Jimmy Page and Brian Auger. Blues and rock, rock blues, swamp blues or whatever you want to call it, never sounded better and more intense than on this album.
