Every so often, there is an album that comes out of nowhere, and throws you off. When I first heard the title track, I closed my ears, because to me, No One Can Beat Teddy P.'s version. Then I calmed down and took a listen, it's not half bad. Acutally, this album is the kind of album I've been looking for, for years! It has that 70's sound that I love, and it sounds like it was well thought out. There are some stale points, like "Humanity", I love the thought behind it, it's just something missing. My two favorites are I Can't Write Left Handed (Bill Withers I'm sure is proud), and "Hang On In There". Wow!!, now that song right there, to me, took John and The Roots to a whole different level. After doing that song, I can't expect anything less! "Shine closes the album perfectly, reminding us what album artistry is all about. I doubt that the naysayers will call this album of the year, but even with it's flaws, it's mine. (Originally reviewed in 2010)
