John Williams (4) – Star Wars / Return Of The Jedi - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
Official soundtrack of the third (in order of release) film in the Star Wars series, originally released by RSO Records in 1983.
Originally released worldwide as a single LP ("A New Hope" was released as a double LP and "The Empire Strikes Back" was a double LP for North America and Japan, one single LP for the rest of the world), even though its complete score was the longest of the original trilogy (2:28:04). As a result of this marketing decision many tracks remained unavailable until the release of the 1993 4-CD set The Original Soundtrack Anthology.
The (supposedly) entire, remastered score was released in 1997 by RCA Victor to coincide with the "Special Edition" re-release of the film trilogy. It was the only soundtrack in the series that had its musical content altered for the Special Edition: tracks "Lapti Nek" (with Sy Snootles on vocals) and "Ewok Celebration" were respectively replaced with "Jedi Rocks" (now also featuring Joh Yowza, Rystáll Sant, Greeata and Lyn Me on vocals) and the much happier "Victory Celebration". This 2-CD set was re-released in 2004 by Sony Classical with different artwork.
The 1983 original version was remastered by Sony Classical and released on LP in 2015. A remastered version of the soundtrack was released by Walt Disney Records on May 4, 2018. This remaster was newly assembled from the highest-quality tapes available, rather than sourced from the existing 1983 album masters.

This 2018 CD "only" contains the original soundtrack LP tracks, but the mastering here is superb...far and away the best presentation of these recordings I have heard.

I unfortunately have a bad copy as well. There is a lot of surface noise, especially through the right channel. If there were no surface noise, this would be a fine pressing. I have Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back from this Gold series and the pressings I own do not have this issue. Not sure what happened with this one...

Superb sound quality on mine. I am so satisfied with it. It sounds better than the original in my opinion. The only downside is the gold color. It does not look good. Don’t know if it’s just a problem with my copy, but it’s uneven looks washed out. Other than that, one of the best acquisition I have made since restarting my collection.

really incomplete soundtrack compared to 1997 cd edition . Death of Yoda, Battle of Endor II (contains probably the most amazing theme when luke fight is father for the last time) . Really disappointing edition.

I got good sound quality on my issue aswell! The only complaint is that big red cow thats visible from across every angle.
Thinking about using tape to cover it up :P

This press in my opinion is only usable as a decoration record. Cant listen to this LP; to much surface noise to be enjoyable. Played this record with my Denon DL-103R cartridge.

I'm listening to my copy right now and for the most part it's absolutely fine! Not sure what these others reviewers ended up with, perhaps a bad batch was sold? Side A has almost invisible surface noise (and is dead silent between tracks) and the frequencies sound great. Side B has issues here and here, but only with the surface noise picking up. There's enough going on in the score to distract you from it.

Sounds terrible, just buy an old one, if you like treble frequencies in your vinyls.
I bought it because my US 1983 one is in bad shape, but it still sounds far far better than this one !
