It’s a shame that JOURNEY will always be remembered for their radio friendly, soft rock output of the late 70’s and 80’s instead of the band that is shown on this record. While the first half of the second track “In the Morning Day” or the second to last track “Conversation” foreshadow what the band would evolve into, this record shows that JOURNEY ought to be heralded as a founding pillar of hard / classic rock among the other more well known bands of the time. Just listen to the opening track “Of a Lifetime” and you’ll agree that it is a crime that it never gets (or got) the air time of other hit hard/classic rock songs of the 70’s. Followed with the instrumental track, “Topaz” from the B-Side and there should be no doubt in your mind that JOURNEY belong alongside the greats of that era.

Combining aggressive guitar licks comparable to HENDRIX and ZEPPELIN, melody similar to the DOORS, moments of driving bass lines akin to SABBATH, and a healthy does of blues and funk influences make this album a gem for anyone interested in pioneers of American hard / classic rock.

This record rips.
