With only BPMs listed on the label ya have to look on the run out groove to catch the names of the trax.Lets kick off with…
“SHO U RITE” / 122BPM. Getting right in there with the fat bass funk. Slightly disco jazz and often refered to as disco house I think that’s wrong, lazy and well off the mark. These tunes roll with enough space and character to be electrofunk and nothing else. Playful melodies twist around vocal samples and Luke touches keys most people leave well alone. Never one to take the easy route, these expressions on the keyboard never become dull for a moment, flowing and shifting naturally and never jarring. The beat is funky and tight with claps and finger snaps, ya can’t help but let ya hips wobble from side to side as yer arms gain a life all their own.
“DISCO NASTY”/ 115BPM. Wow, this is twisted ! groovey rhythm patterns with a lovely wide open snare hit on the 4 lead us into something quite off kilter with old school disco bleeps running up and down with gentle swooshes beneath before something that I can only describe as an out of tune kettle drum from deepest space carves out the hook. Still, it’s not TOO out there, Luke manages to keep you in there coz it’s all happy and playful. Then ,of all things we geta short flute skit and the funky mid synth hook joins in and ya feets are no longer hesitating. This is genius !
But wait, there’s more…yup VOCODERS ! “ROOOBOOOTS …. FREEEAKAZOOOIDS”…want more ? ya then get a funky worm work out, short n sweet and never over cooked, brilliant ! This makes ya throw some very odd yet still funky shapes !
”CE PORTE” / 110BPM Definitely the most ‘disco’ of these 3 trax. Big yet lose stabs announce the start of a dancefloor workout guaranteed to bring smiles. No twists or weirdness here, just great synth pads ina 70’s stylee. The beats are 4 to the floor but with plenty of character and effects to brighten them up.We’re treated here and there to more ‘funky worm’ type high synth but this time ina much more relaxed way.The man has a mastery of levels in the mixdown that gives everything enough space to shine without overriding anything else. The pace is just right to give ya feet a good work out if ya know how to slide instead of stomp and the girls will bump to it fo sure !
This is a great 12” and fit for play at any time, day or night, in or out. Ya can dance to it, smoke to it or have sex to it…or all 3 ! 10/ 10
