It’s all too easy to get caught up in deconstructing the music, connecting dots, drawing on influences, and basically treating the sounds like they were some sort of flowchart ... when what we should really be doing is looking down at our feet as they do their little dance, and watching our finger tips tap out the beat in complete unconsciousness. And Kevin Costner & Modern West do just that, picking up right where they left off on “Untold Truths,” laying out some understated, dynamic, danceable, air-guitar playing numbers, that in the end bring you right back to the most important thing on this planet ... the relationship we have with those we love, and with those we’ve loved and lost.

The music of Modern West is real and genuine, and straight from the heart without becoming over indulgent, sappy, or contrived. Modern West makes you feel the heat, your shoulders bounce with the rhythm, and your backbone shimmers with delight as your head bops in perfect time ... like it’s you on the stage, shouting out verse after verse, raising long buried dust as you splinter the floorboards with your custom tooled cowboy boots. Let me assure, the music needs to be played at high volume as it builds and swirls around you, encapsulating you in guitar riffs that Wishbone Ash only dream of having created. This is music that puts a smile on your face, and gives the evening meaning.

Oh yeah ... with this much praise there just has to be a down side, and that gripe is the same one I had with his other releases. I have no idea why Kevin felt the need to put his name out there, as if Modern West needed to rely on his fame, rather then just being a member of a totally smokin’ hot alternative country band.

You’ll taste Savoy Brown, Ten Years After, Dream Syndicate, The Cash Brothers, The Derek Trucks Band, The Rolling Stones, The Drive By Truckers, The Dead String Brothers, The Chesterfield Kings and a dozen other bands that totally wipe you out ... and that’s a very good thing.
