A solid Malaco production on which Floyd’s voice effortlessly achieves a fine balance between a certain honey-like quality, and a more natural, down home rawness. The hit singles notably burn hotter than a boxful of vintage hot pants on sale: “Groove Me” features a classic Southern-style chorus of crescending horns, while “Baby Let Me Kiss You” is funky enough for three, with a slinky bass line and plenty of hoarky yelping. Another highlight, “What Our Love Needs”, is just superlatively crafted, a delicate charmer. “Don’t Leave Me Lonely” is a poignant weeper that actually starts off with Floyd boo-hooing, the poor guy, and ends up in a drama of Spectoresque proportions. Very tasteful strings in there. As a matter of fact, the arrangements by Wardell Quezergue are splendid throughout the whole album. A varied soul-funk LP record by a pleasant singer, that’s quality to me.
