What was the film where the orphan boy emerges from out of nowhere and transforms the town by riling the establishment and rallying its misfits?

No matter- the story gets told every so often, as it did in Rochester, New York in the early 90s when Koo Koo Boy hula-hooped his way into our hearts and turned the underground music scene into a playground of theatrics with his trademark bleached hair, liquid blue eye-shadow, striped shirt and little black boots. Think Debbie Harry fronting The Animals at a carny show for lost souls.

The picture paints itself; and this, a full decade before mash-up music and YouTube parody bands. Before viral images and 7 second vines, when real and present fans experienced the mania that was a gritty live show, with snapping guitar strings, quaking stage risers, and a pantless boy pinwheeling his way across the stage to the clamor of frenzied fans.

This is what made Koo Koo Boy the darling of the Flower City- his unique mix of antics and earnestness. It’s no wonder that a city built on the frames of Kodak film would cast the spotlight on this post-punk waif whose persona flickered between Fellini’s La Strada and Jean Seberg’s Saint Joan.

There isn't a song on this album that I don't like. It's like a handful of Pixy Stix, each one having its unique blend of tart sweetness.

The Sixties Meets the Eighties in the Nineties. 12 bouncy, melody-driven tunes about everything from serial killers to vampire chicks, celebrity obsession ("Pop Friends"), social outsiders ("I'm a Monster") and even a 60's cover (appropriated as a proto-gay anthem) "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby". As one newspaper critic put it, "The best damn B-Movie soundtrack you ever heard".
