Well, it's been ten years since the release of 604. Ten years is a long time for any band. Indeed, most bands disband long before this milestone. Ladytron have achieved this goal, having thankfully settled with Nettwerk (after some truly awful treatment from Island).

Okay, so what do Ladytron sound like in 2011?

Truth be told, they've grown up into a very mature band. The days of Playgirl and Seventeen are long gone. The band now have a much fuller sound, indeed they sound a million miles more assured than on 604. The progress HAS been steady, as anyone who's followed the band will attest to.

But enough history, what about Gravity The Seducer?

Let's see...

Opening track White Elephant instantly envelops you in a warm, familiar, lush sound. The term "Synth-Pop" is commonly attributed to Ladytron, even though the band discarded that sound around 2003. This is serious, deep music. Lyrically it's a little cryptic, but that just adds to the mystery. Melody abounds, so it's easily enjoyable on any level of listener participation.

Next is the poppier single, Mirage. Almost late 60's psych in arrangement, it zips along nicely and carries every familair trait that makes up a classic Ladytron song.

White Gold is a downtempo track, with some serious minor keys. One of the reasons Ladytron are one of my favourite bands is that they have this knack of making beautiful, mysterious music and White Gold epitomises this completely. It's not all dark though, the chorus lifts everything up. Not for long though, as a crashing drop soon ensues! Keep an ear out for Mira's excellent backing vocals (more about Mira later on, don't worry).

Ace Of Hz was released long before the album (featuring on a Playstation football game of all things). Hey, if it gets the band more exposure that's great. Always good to have new fans on board. It's classic Ladytron, and fits in with the rest of the album nicely. It's much more pop than most of the material here, a fantastic singalong with some nice synth work.

Ritual sees the first of the instrumental tracks. Yes, there's a few. Very much in the style of The Presets / Midnight Juggernauts, it's a zippy fast tempo number. It's a strange one at the same time, as it appears to feature Mira ad-libbing some oohs & aahs but as the track progresses you realise it's not even a voice at all but a synth. Very clever.

Finally, on Moon Palace, Mira gets centre stage. A very strong song with a pulsating bassline, it's great to hear Mira sing (as opposed to her earlier material which was more spoken word). Helen sings backup on the chorus and bridge fantastically, with cool effects on her voice. Classic Ladytron!

Next is Altitude Blues, one of my personal favourites on this album. Mira again takes lead (in a similar style to Water Lilly), over a sound that initially screams 1985 Miami Vice. You know, Don Johnston driving at night in a black convertible Ferrari Daytona, wind blowing in his hair and unknown concern on his face. This soon flips, and you're sent into a trippy euphoria for a fleeting few seconds. Maybe I'm not making any sense with this one, but like all tracks that I love, it makes me daydream.

Ambulances starts strongly, with quite skitterish percussion (almost Dubstep) under some truly beautiful vocals from Helen. It doesn't really progress past the first minute, so it's not one of the stronger songs in my opinion. That is, until the last 30 seconds. Then it goes all bombastic, which loses my favour completely. It sounds, in all honesty, like an idea for a song that the band rushed to completion with a lazy finish.

Melting Ice reminds me of International Dateline, if only for tempo and feeling. It's not got quite the same amount of melodic flair as that Witching Hour classic, but it still holds interest. At first it may grate on you as the key change appears to happen at the wrong time, but give it a few listens and you'll certainly appreciate it. In fact it actually reminds me of Some Great Reward era Depeche Mode.

Transparent Days is a nice track, one that could be used as an ident for some TV station. To play under the "what's coming up tonight" section of programming. Okay, I admit it. It's an instrumental filler.

Thankfully we get one more proper song.

Ninety Degrees. It is redemption for any misgivings you have heard throughout this album. This is where the album comes together as a whole. Gravity The Seducer. It is beautiful yet tragic. The best kind!

The album should have ended.

Instead, we get an instrumental take on Ace Of Hz called Aces High. Totally throwaway. Not even worth inclusion as a hidden track, let alone one supposed to wrap up an album.

So that's it.

An album that could have been perfect if it was trimmed ever so slightly in places. It's still nowhere near the complete genius that was Witching Hour, but I still recommend it highly.
