When I heard that Laid Back had reworked leftovers from their "White Horse" sessions, I was way skeptical. There's almost always a reason you haven't heard unreleased stuff...not only is it unfinished (not that very many things are ever really finished, so much as abandoned), but normally it just isn't as good as what ended up getting released.

I was like, "Come on, have you listened to the rest of Laid Back's catalog? 'White Horse' was an anomaly; they didn't have the funk, they weren't masters of electro, they just got lucky." I mean, could they escape their roots in schmaltz and really come back 30 years later with anything that's worth notice, something that captures the dancefloor aesthetic and alternative-vibed essence of their 1981 masterpiece, yet that is also modern, DJ-friendly, and musically good?

Why, yes. yes they could. And they did. The Cosyland EP.

They really pulled it off. "Cocaine Cool" is a "White Horse"-style vocal dance track (same bassline, even), while "Cosyland", "Get Laid Back" and "101 Part Two" are downtempo cuts of the same quality. It's clearly not just old noodlings with a modern beat on top; some of the source recordings are vintage, but each song has been fully thought out and put together in a modern studio. They don't go on any longer than they have to, either, perhaps much to the dismay of 'progressive'-era DJs who prefer monotony. The tracks are all 'electro', of a kind—not electro house, or even electro funk, just electro—and there's some actual melody and 'warmth' in them.

I'm really impressed.
