Two uncles of mine, who were teenagers in the 1970s, were arguing about whether Led Zeppelin was an alternative, hard rockin' band -- the heavy metal Radiohead of their day -- or just a pop band. I can see how after listening to this album, one might say Led Zep was a pop band. Not that they don't rock, but some of the tracks here are lighter (like the hit "Jamaica", I mean, "Dyer Maker"), and their hits tend to have an everybody-sing-along quality that really kind of undermines their reputation. Nevertheless, Houses of the Holy ranks up there with Led Zeppelin IV as an essential rock album of the '70s, and no other group sounds like 'em.
