Much of my goodwill towards Lemongrass stems from fond memories of his first two albums. IKEBANA, however, suffers from cheesiness which even that goodwill can't forgive. Even though "Beach Ball" kicks things off on an unoffensive note, the terribly silly funk of "Sync It Up to Love" makes me wince. "Rendez-Vous" takes the sting off somewhat with a rolling piano line and strings. The Japanese vocals are a new addition for Lemongrass, but putting them in well-worn sonic settings dulls their appearance -- "Ajisai," "Anohito," and "Hunwari" all lack spark. And ironically enough, the English-language "Cross the Ocean" has more pep than most of the other vocal appearances, thanks to its mellow breakbeat. When he tries disco, the results come out similarly bland: "Flow of the Sky" and "Stretch My Arms" could be the same track. But sometimes, he also delivers a tender, delicate track like "Akari" -- with IKEBANA, Lemongrass giveth and Lemongrass taketh away.
