Lexincrypt is the one-man project of Justin Cameron. After two albums Lexincrypt was put on hold in 2005, to be revived five years later when the album "Of Unsound Mind" was released on the aptly named label Crunch Pod. Last month this same label released the EP "Scar Tissue", that contains ten remixes of tracks from "Of Unsound Mind" by artists who like to make harsh and pounding electro and industrial. Again this is one those EPs where I'd like to put the word EP in quotation marks; with a run time of over 50 minutes it's almost as long as the actual album.

I'm always of two minds when it comes to such remix records. Depending on the contributors it can work out really well, but then again, do you really need six interpretations of a song like "Scar Tissue", especially if it contains hysterical movie samples that return in each of these remixes? Of the contributing artists, C/A/T is the only one I'm familiar with, but that says more about me. The different remixes vary wildly, and I really like Sinsect's version of "Misanthropic Me", or Hodr's remix of "Scar Tissue", but the way Exeter mangles that same song is much less to my liking. Other than that, there are remixes by Xiescive and Filament 38 who also contributed to "Of Unsound Mind".

What is quite remarkable is that "Of Unsound Mind" as an album had a much less agressive sound compared to the previous albums of Lexincrypt; if we are to believe Justin's bio on his website, the impact of several important events shifted the balance to an altogether more depressive sound. However, for this EP the most upbeat and agressive songs were selected ("Scar Tissue" (6x), "Misanthropic Me" (3x) en "Unfaithful" (1x)), and the aggression turned up a few pitches, especially for the song "Unfaithful". As an introduction to "Of Unsound Mind" this EP doesn't really fit the bill, but it might be nice for fans of one of the ten contributing remixers. I think I'll put this EP back in my cabinet and rather go with the actual album.
