Artists who manage to transform their studio albums' energy into a live version just as exact, without too much unecessary improvisation, are worth every respect. And Light Asylum definitely fit the list - I've seen them playing live recently, the energy and charisma of singer Shannon Funchess is fundamentally crucial to the duo, beyond words.

Musically, there are references to be sure - but it is such a nice surprise to hear someone as compelling to provide something in their own right learning from and confronting (and not being slave to) any of their influences; electronic music in its most simplistic form with raging contralto that sends shivers down the spine and radiates with positivity and life just the same, in one amazing cocktail of obscure dance music frenzy. If you prefer - then Shannon is a stunning mixture of Grace Jones, Skin, Douglas McCarthy and Diamanda Galas testing out Light Asylum's contemporary beat box that demonstrates with sheer precision how Yazoo and Propaganda would have sounded today if they delivered "You & Me Both" or "A Secret Wish", two possible blueprints for LA, thirty years on from their initial release back in 1983.

Among the new wave of groups, trios, duos and/or individuals that grace a decade and a half now stepping deeper into 21st century, Light Asylum is a well conceived, chucked hand grenade into the mouth of stereotypical hybrid world of indie. How far will their first batch of impressive EPs and this amazing studio album take them, only Light Asylum knows... but from what is offered so far - there's no need to worry.

And "Light Asylum" is definitely an album that will be remembered for years to come - because it has character too tough to knock down. Ignore any moderate (or negative) reviews - this is a truly welcome change in the world of electro-pop. Listening to pieces like "A Certain Person", "Shallow Tears", "The Hour Fortress" or the beautiful "Angel Tongue", to name a few, this is a shivering, rewarding listen - an album that is mercilessly raw and rabid, but just as beautiful and sensitive.

In some cases, very sensitive. Devour it.
