With St. Germain having departed F-Communications for the more jazz-renowned Blue Note Records, Llorca fills in his jazz-house shoes quite ably and effectively. On his debut NEWCOMER, Llorca slaps that double bass until it’s ready to give up. The opening track, “The Novel Sound,” is a perfect introduction for what’s to come: plenty of jazz riffs, sax solos, and a beat that’s sure to make you move. “Indigo Blues” throws in some sultry vocals over its Latin jazz rhythms; it’s a song that should be sung by a woman while lounging on a grand piano, while the broken beats of “I Cry” emphasize the soulful male vocal. “Any How” merges an electro feel to a jazz sensibility, a combination that you wouldn’t necessarily think would work… but it does. “True to Me” is pleasant, but doesn’t have quite the same energy or edge as the earlier tracks; the same holds true for “Lalo Caught Me Dancing.” “My Precious Thing” adds some delicate lullaby vocals that make it rather sweet. “The End,” appropriately enough, ends the album (unless you count the hidden track) on a funky downtempo note. While no one can really replace St. Germain, Llorca helps us not feel the loss as deeply.
