There’s a real reason to score Singles and EP’s, and the ultimate reason is seldom the hit single, which in this case was “Superfreaky Memories,” though “Neon Lights” is just about as strong a song as you’re ever gonna find, and can stand toe toe with anything Luna’s laid down. Both of these tracks can be found on Days Of Our Nights, however, the real gem is “The Bad Vibe Merchant,” a great little number that does not show up on any of their albums, and can only be found right here.

The songs starts out quietly enough, sounding for all the world like one of Luna’s deeply layered ballads, but it quickly kicks into high gear, and is both musically and lyrically, sonically charged as it steadily rolls on and on, with guitars sounding like chilled spring water. But the really cool thing, the thing that makes this track stand out, is that lost within the chorus are the lines, “You make the butter run, and the ice cream melt ...” It was this infamous wordplay that is one of the unexpected joys surrounding Dean Wareham’s lovingly goofy lyrics ... Dean must have truly enjoyed this line, because in 2003 on the Dean & Britta L’Avventura release, he’s constructed a number entitled “Ginger Snaps [and Sugar Winks],” where this imagery of counterpoints and verbal juxtaposition is expanded on, and once heard, will never leave your head.

This is a rather difficult import to find, but certainly worth the time and effort.
