Their best album, hands down. The band really comes into their own on this sophomore album release. The engineering is perfect and their sound comes through as uniquely Lush. Miki isn't hiding her vocals as on some previous releases and this album has good variety and depth with it's songs.

Pretty sure I have this version but mine has slightly different info:

Barcode: 5 014436 401114 - there's an additional '1' in the '401114'
Matrix / Runout (Side A): MPO CAD4011A1 I'VE SEEN A COUNCIL SKIP - mine says 'A1' or maybe 'AI'
Matrix / Runout (Side B): MPO CAD4011B1 AND A SUNSET STRIP - mine says 'B1' or maybe 'BI'

Does anyone know for sure which is correct?

Up to the point of recording this album, Lush were both - loved and in a way criticised for their improvement. Early material definitely had more creative depth and uniqueness; while perfectly (if not expectedly) fitting into the 4AD catalogue for their dreamlike quality sound, and somewhat dangerously close to what Cocteau Twins were championing (dispersed, intense, melancholic beauty), Lush´s early producer Tim Friese-Greene (of Talk Talk fame) helped out the group giving them their own identity - with which Lush successfully avoided any possible accusations of being nothing short of a total clone of what had become a bit trendy at the time (especially considering 4AD´s criteria and/or trademark). Of course, it didn´t take long that Lush fell under the spell of Robin Guthrie, producing their 1991 album "Spooky" (labeled by many as their first proper full studio album, although "Scar" pre-dated it two years earlier). Immediately the sounds were recognisable but not necessarily as Lush. In a way something of their earlier charm was wiped out missing and for obvious reasons Lush chose not to work with Guthrie ever again. Instead, they turned to Mike Hedges (notable for his work with The Cure, among many), and "Split" was a truly nice suprise, making Emma and Miki sound more audible, ditching their early honey vocal melts for decipherable lyrics about love, personal trauma, cynicism and despair.

While it might have not been as accepted the way their earlier work was, "Split" is definitely worth attention for bringing Lush´s songwriting qualities to a new level. It didn´t lose the group´s trademark sound, but gave it all a bit more juice and even more - experimental character ("The Invisible Man" alone is worth possessing the entire album, further stretched between childishly warm ballads, augmented with string arrangements, plus the established, and merciless, guitar brushes).
