for one part this is a rather commercial pop-rock album that probably will not please the fans of early symphonic-prog machiavel. but there's that other look that can be thrown upon this album: seeing it as a study on the state of belgian studio musician- and technicianship around 1987. I consider this album as a landmark in the history of belgian music of the 1980s. the important and ultra creative belpop, coldwave, new wave and synth years were over in 1987 but have left their highly visible traces - new underground phenomena were already at the verge of breaking through. studios in belgium were equipped with state-of-the-art gear and ICP for example gained worldwide fame. production techniques and engineers have developed to a very high level but likewise maintained to keep that unique benelux-feeling. musicians of all fields came together in studios, trying to make a living or just using their creative freedom [thierry plas for example played on WHERE IS CHINA's fantastic album "invading" just a few months before].
"the cry of pleasure" is a showcase of these musical and creative connections. true, most of the album is indeed ordinary pop-rock and we can see that machiavel wished to please as much "normal" people as possible with this album. but there are 4 excellent tracks: "flesh and blood", a short, fast, powerful, keyboard-heavy, rock-hit with its counterpart "silences lead", a beautiful ballad with a superb melancholic mood. in both tracks mario guccio's vocals and the interplay between synths and guitars stand out.
then there are "wait", and "your soul" who really make this album worth being saved from the bargain bins and brought to heart. fans of TC MATIC's brilliant 1985 album "yeye" will be immediately be pleased because there is a very similar feel of artful overproduction. arno hintjens himself plays harmonica on "your soul". "wait" and "your soul" are the accomplishments of this album because they are a working melange of elements from rock, europop, disco and new wave. superb and joyful!
