An absolute stone cold classic with lyrics as relevant today as when first released. Superb New York disco that still fills the dancefloor.

The version I received didn't have the piano intro either. BOTH sides were the radio friendly version ("where only upper class people stay"). Both sides had a time of 5:01.

There But For the Grace of God Go I was a monster on the dancefloor at the end of the 70's. Penned by August 'Kis Creole' Darnell, it was tarred as racist and homophobic, which of course it wasn't. It is a simple song of protest, a story of irony and hypocrisy, the stupidity of negative and ignorant thinking. The folks in the story thought that by removing their child from an environment that they considered 'less than perfect' they could protect her. In doing so, they turned her into a natural freak!

Oddly enough, in 1994 Farley & Heller in their Fire Island guise, released a cover of this song and received the same reaction. 15 years and people have learnt nothing. The title is a common saying meaning that another person's misfortune could have been yours but for the grace of God. In other words, it's not because your sh*t don't stink, it's simply that nobody smelt it. You got lucky?

This promo version has the 'radio friendly' lyrics change: the line "With no blacks, no Jews and no gays" is changed to "Where only upper class people stay"; and "Popping pills and smoking weed" becomes "Gaining weight and losing sleep".

Another one without much review?? Music from this era never gets old -it has that warm 70s sound which is lacking in much of the computer age disco of today. "There But For The Grace of God Go I" is a true masterpiece in my opinion. A so funky crowd pleaser, and honestly never gets old. Classic!

Side B is a longer version, adding a 00:17 slow piano intro, not present on either promotional or commercial releases.

Actually the slow piano intro wasn't added. It was part of the original mix and was removed to create the shorter (5:01) version. There was yet another version which replaced the "no Blacks, no Jews and no Gays" lyric with another ("where only upper class people stay") to make it suitable for radio play.

The Timmy Regisford Long mix has an accapella breakdown a few bars into the start of the track. However it does have a clap backing, but am not sure if there is an acca of this track anywhere else?
