This is trance music of the highest order from master Gnawa musicians of Morocco. The Gnawa are descendants of Fulani, Peul and Bambara slaves and other more recent migrants from West Africa.

The language used in the trance music alternates between Arabic and Bambara; the purpose of the music is to alter the mental state of the participants in order to heal and/or purify.

The Gnawa have always incorporated music from outside sources into their own. On this release the purity of sound and conviction of intent that is integral to Pharoah's playing allows him to seemlessly offer melodies into the Gnawa ritual context.

If you come across this release, ignore what others rate it as and just buy it! This music has some of the fastest, most precise and subtle percussion you will hear anywhere. Wonderful, timeless music; guaranteed rump-shaker and highly recommended.
