With regards to the wide reaching opinions on whether or not this recording is worth it's salt as 'a classic', both in a wider sense and within the boundaries of avant guard electronics & Krautrock; It easily stands alone from it's predecessors due to its choice of sparse ingredients, percussive qualities & style, and from it's contemporaries due to its length. From Sueno Latino to Remake Uno/Duo, it's influence through direct sampling & cover versions spawned shorter dance-floor excursions, with Sueno Latino (The Latin Dream) being highly responsible for the Balearic comparison's to which the original is often drawn.

In the vein of the work of Manuel Gottsching, Klaus Schulze & the troup of talent forming the German minimalist synth rock foundation, this can hardly be deemed as exciting, nor groundbreaking. In fact by comparison, E2-E4 can sound a bit like being on hold while calling an insurance company. Sublime, calming and clean: Not quite the overall definition of the genre from which it came.

It can only really be taken as it is; regardless of what is was supposed to be, ought to be or isn't- a translucent, euphoric calling of hot sun & turquoise sea's, or a fantasy adventure into your own personal paradise. Or not, as the case might be ;-)

I´ve got a copy that ist etched with 20.004-A1 and 20.004-B1. I´m wondering if it`s that version? Anyone got the same?

renowned early '80s krautrock / proto-techno classic! German guitar guru Manuel Gottsching, founder of legendary krautrock pioneers Ash Ra Temple (which morphed into the new-age-ier Ashra), made a few records in the eighties under his own name.
E2-E41, recorded in Berlin in 1981 and released in '84, was first and foremost among them. It's rightly hailed as a classic and was a great inspiration for early Detroit techno artists like Derrick May and Carl Craig. The resonant timelessness of E2-E4 has extended beyond many other albums of the era and its influence has continuously popped up in more recent minimalist techno circles, most noticeably within the Cologne scene.

E2-E4 is one loooong track split at a judicious edit at the end of each side, with nine titled and timed subdivisions indicated on the cover (suggestive of a chess match: "Quiet Nervousness," "Queen A Pawn," "Draw"). The album flows and flows and flows through Gottsching's guitar and electronics drifting and dancing beautifully over the continuous, pulsating, subtly-shifting proto-techno beat. It's so very pleasant and airy, also soooo hypnotic and ahead of its time. Even after an hour you won't want to end, once it has lulled you into trance. Listening to this, it's easy to see why the Boredoms' Eye would revere it and of course those above mentioned Detroit legends too. An absolute classic.

I have a copy of this ltd. edition first press, which is exactly like shown here, except for there ist no "lc-code" printed on the Label. Can anybody tell if this an original copy or some kind of bootleg or something?

oh wow! This is THE record that describes the comming of an whole new genre! 1981.. never heard nothing like this from that time, if anyone of you knows more like this from from the same year tell me because i can't find any! I mean none of the now known names from detroit and other citys of ledgens did this kind of music at that time. This must be it.

A very good record but also very overhyped in these comments. Klaus Schulze was putting out stuff like this as early as 1976. Surprisingly this was recorded in 1981, the same year "Tonwelle" came out where Manuel Göttsching accompanied Klaus Schulze on guitar. Listen to the track "Druck" and see if you can spot where the inspiration for E2-E4 may stem from, who knows right! When you read the reviews here a pattern begins to emerge, most of these comments reference Detroit producers like Derrick May, Juan Atkin, Carl Craig...It sounds as though the reviewers only got interested in Berlin School of music after it was praised by one of these guys. The irony is that none of these techno producers have made anything near as good as E2-E4 in their own field, I guess Carl Craig tried his best on "Landcruising" but still...

so here i am again listening to this album for the XXXXXth time.
I cant stress this enough, this album is "The Terminator" of underground music.
No words can describe how good this piece of work is
